Description
€5.000 (inc. 6% VAT, exc. transport etc.) Marijke A. Deege, mahogony reliefs, unique, total length 250 cm, cross-section of reliefs 35 cm The title is a quotation from the book of Ecclesiastes and the text (in the Authorised Version) continues: because God answereth him in the joy of his heart. The Dutch rendering has the verb 'zich vermeien', an old-fashioned word for passing time congenially. On each disk I have carved the predator of those 'passing time congenially’ as a symbol of the transient nature of life. If you click on the photo, the underlying page will reveal the carving in its entirety. From left to right, towards the centre relief: The cat watches the doves, the owl sees his prey scampering on the ground and, From right to left, towards the centre relief: the frog will devour the dragonflies, as will the pike the bitterlings. And the centre relief itself shows Adam and Eve with the serpent. This mahogany carving is not suitable for display outdoors.
