Description

€3.000 (inc. 6% VAT, exc. transport etc.) Marcus Ravenswaaij, bronze, unique, 22/44 x 16 cm The photo shows the large bronze relief from the courtyard of Loevestein castle, where, on 5 June 1619, statesman Hugo de Groot was ‘incarcerated in perpetuity’. Much is known about his life (1583-1645) and can easily be found on the internet. Marcus Ravenswaaij was honoured with the commission to make a memorial to Hugo de Groot's life at Loevestein. Using staircases, one taking him to his cell, the other by which he was carried to his escape, the sculptor has cleverly, yet clearly, shown Hugo's period of captivity in the castle with both his wife and maid. This is a small relief in bronze that can easily be attached to a wall.
